Michigan Tech

We prepare students to create the future. Michigan Tech is a nationally prominent and internationally recognized technological university. We are dedicated to educating our students to be the best. In today's world, this means having the knowledge and ability to develop, understand, apply, manage, and communicate science and technology.

Our 6,500 students choose from more than 120 programs, leading to associate's, bachelor's, master's and/or doctoral degrees in arts and human sciences, business and economics, computing, engineering, forest resources and environmental sciences, sciences, and technology.

Our location, in the heart of Upper Michigan's scenic Keweenaw Peninsula, offers unparalleled opportunities for outdoor recreation and adventure. Our campus overlooks the Portage canal, a long, winding ribbon of water that connects just a few miles away at either end to Lake Superior. Downtown Houghton features coffee shops, theaters, restaurants, and stores just a short walk from campus.

Highlights: Michigan Tech is ranked among the top national universities by U.S. News & World Report and is placed among the "Top 100 Values" of all universities by Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine. Twenty-five percent of incoming students ranked in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class. We have a 12:1 student-faculty ratio, and our newly renovated J. R. Van Pelt Library is equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, including an electronic information center with the latest campus and world news, and twenty-two small-group study rooms. The facility's number of full-text online journals has increased 200 percent in three years. Our Career Center offers eRecruiting to connect employers and students. Last year, about 4,000 jobs were posted and resumes of Tech students were viewed by potential employers for each one. In addition, nearly 250 employers came to campus to interview Tech students. It's no wonder then that Michigan Tech graduates averaged six job interviews and ninety-five percent of reporting graduates were employed, enrolled in graduate school, or in military service within six months after graduation last year.

Campus Life and Sports: There are more than 150 student groups on campus, including academic, ethnic, cultural, social fraternities/sororities, student government, honor society, media, religious, service, and special interests as well as nearly 60 intramural and club sports. Last year, over 70 percent of students participated in intramural sports.

Michigan Tech sponsors varsity programs in 13 sports. Our men's ice hockey team competes in the top-notch NCAA Div. 1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The other 12 teams – men's football, women's volleyball, and men's and women's squads in basketball, cross country, tennis, Nordic skiing, and track and field – are all competitive at the NCAA Division II level. Tech has its own downhill ski hill and cross country ski trails, as well as an 18-hole golf course. This past year, we hosted the 2006 Cross Country Skiing Junior Olympics and next year we will host the 2007-08 US Cross Country Skiing Championships.

Our incredible Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts is home to a line-up of national theatrical touring companies, comedians, country and popular music artists, symphony orchestras, chamber groups, and more. There are also nine musical groups on campus to join – from Gospel Choir to Symphony Orchestra to the Pep Band.

Annual Traditions:

  • K-Day – Everyone takes the afternoon off to enjoy McLain State Park on the shores of Lake Superior, the world's largest freshwater lake. There's food, Frisbee, music, skydivers, Medieval jousting, student group information, and, for some, swimming in the greatest Great Lake.

  • Parade of Nations – It's a celebration of all the nations of the world who have students, faculty, and staff at Michigan Tech. It ends with a great ethnic food festival.
  • Homecoming – We put a different slant on the usual college experience: students dress in their worst attire and parade through campus in autos that barely run! There's a Hobo Mixer, competitions between campus organizations, and various special events all weekend. It all culminates with a Saturday afternoon football game at beautiful Sherman Field.
  • Winter Carnival – It's the longest-running and largest annual college winter festival. Massive snow statues emerge on campus and in town. Skits, queen competitions, first-class entertainment, tourists everywhere, and the best in college hockey make this our greatest event!
  • Spring Fling – Before hitting the books one more time for finals, students take a break on the campus mall and celebrate the sun! There are games; food booths; rock, jazz, and country bands; sports competitions; and more.
