Announcing comes after 5-1 defeat of Sweden.

April 28, 2008

PORTLAND, Maine - Jeff Halpern (Potomac, Md./Tampa Bay Lightning/Princeton University) has been named captain of the 2008 U.S. Men's National Team, while Mark Stuart (Rochester, Minn./Boston Bruins/Colorado College) and Zach Parise (Faribault, Minn./New Jersey Devils/University of North Dakota) have been tabbed alternate captains. The announcement came today from U.S. Head Coach John Tortorella.

Team USA downed Sweden last night by a 5-1 count at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine, in its lone tune-up prior to beginning play in the 72nd annual International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship Friday (May 2) against Latvia in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The U.S. is finishing its training camp today through Wednesday at the Family Ice Center in Falmouth, Maine, prior to heading to Halifax.

The coaching staffs from both the U.S. and Swedish men's national teams will conduct a free coaching clinic for youth coaches in the area tonight at 7 p.m. at the Family Ice Center. Some 70 coaches have pre-registered for the event.
